Laser Therapy Q & A

How does laser therapy improve my pain?

Medical lasers use the heat produced by high-intensity light energy to serve as a precise scalpel, remove tumors, and treat various physical problems.

But there’s another type of laser that produces different results. Dr. Henze uses a next-generation class IV laser, which uses a low-intensity wavelength.

Low-intensity (class IV) laser therapy is often called low-level laser treatment (LLLT). These devices are also frequently called cold lasers, but they are not cold.

Class IV lasers produce gentle heat that can safely travel through your skin, reach deep below the surface, and trigger healing activities in cells.

As the laser energy interacts with cells, it activates cellular metabolism and leads to activities that:

  • Reduce inflammation
  • Increase energy production
  • Improve circulation
  • Trigger new blood vessel growth
  • Stimulate nerve regeneration
  • Boost your immune system
  • Activate stem cells (promoting the growth of cartilage, muscle, bone, and other tissues)

These activities relieve pain and accelerate healing in damaged tissues.

When would I need laser therapy?

Dr. Henze may recommend laser therapy for conditions such as:

  • Arthritis
  • Joint injuries
  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Knee pain
  • Hip pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Muscle spasms
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Bursitis
  • Headaches and migraines

Though laser therapy can be a standalone treatment, Dr. Henze typically uses it to complement your chiropractic treatments. Before recommending laser therapy, he reviews your medical history, completes a thorough physical exam, and takes X-rays if needed to verify injuries.

Then he works with you to create a comprehensive treatment plan that includes chiropractic care and supportive healing therapies.

What happens during laser therapy?

The laser is a handheld device that Dr. Henze places against your skin. You feel the laser as it’s pressed against your skin, and you may feel warmth, but laser therapy is never painful.

He directs the laser into the injured, painful area and holds it there for a short amount of time. Class IV lasers are more powerful than other cold lasers. As a result, they can treat larger areas, produce better pain relief, and take less time to achieve optimal healing.

Depending on the severity of your pain and injuries, you may need several treatments to get the best relief. Dr. Henze gives you the details after he diagnoses the underlying problem.
