Back Pain Q & A

Why do I have back pain?

Pain most often develops in your lower back (lumbar spine) because it supports your body weight while allowing the full range of movement. But you can also struggle with pain in your middle/upper back (thoracic spine).

Back pain often occurs because of traumatic injuries (during sports or after a fall or auto accident) or over years of repeated movements (overuse injuries).

Natural degeneration leads to painful conditions, such as:

  • Herniated discs
  • Facet joint arthritis
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Bone spurs
  • Vertebral compression fractures
  • Pinched nerves (radiculopathy)
  • Slipped vertebrae (spondylolisthesis)

Children and adults may have spinal curvatures that cause middle and lower back pain, such as kyphosis and scoliosis.

What other symptoms could I have with back pain?

Your back pain may be constant or come and go. It could range from a dull ache to severe electric shock pain. Many spine conditions and injuries push against the nearby blood vessels and nerves.

Disrupted blood flow can cause problems throughout the body area served by the vessel. Pinched nerves cause pain and tingling traveling down your leg or arm or throughout your chest (depending on the compressed nerve’s location).

Sudden, extreme pain shooting down one leg is the classic sign of a pinched sciatic nerve (sciatica). Severe nerve damage leads to numbness and muscle weakness in your arms or legs.

What back pain treatments might I need?

Spinal manipulation is the foundation of chiropractic treatment for back pain. Realigning your spine promotes your body’s natural healing ability.

Dr. Henze has extensive training in Palmer techniques, including several manual spinal manipulation approaches. He combines manual techniques with other therapies, creating personalized treatments that may include any of the following:

  • Spinal decompression
  • Therapeutic massage
  • Laser therapy
  • Trigger point therapy
  • Activator Method®
  • Myofascial release
  • Pulsed electromagnetic field therapy (PEMF)
  • Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS)

Dr. Henze also reviews your diet and provides nutritional counseling when needed to improve your health and support healing. He also recommends an appropriate exercise regimen for your back, giving you the tools to strengthen your spinal structure and improve mobility.
